Houston faces a critical maternal mental health crisis. Despite being the fourth-largest city in the United States, thousands of new mothers lack access to mental health support, clean living environments, and basic postpartum resources—creating devastating outcomes for families and communities.
Wings of Care provides comprehensive, wraparound support through three integrated service pillars—each addressing critical needs during the vulnerable postpartum period.
We coordinate and financially support 3-6 therapy sessions with licensed mental health professionals specializing in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Our network includes therapists who accept Medicaid, offer sliding-scale fees, and provide culturally competent care.
We provide 1-3 professional home cleanings using non-toxic, baby-safe products. Research shows clean environments reduce cortisol levels by 35% and significantly decrease PPD risk. Our service removes a major stressor during postpartum recovery.
We deliver care packages containing essential items for mothers and babies—addressing immediate practical needs that create stress and financial burden during the postpartum period. Packages are customized based on family needs.
What makes Wings of Care unique is our integrated approach. We don't just address one aspect of postpartum struggle—we recognize that mental health, environment, and basic needs are interconnected. A mother can't fully benefit from therapy if she's overwhelmed by a cluttered home or stressed about affording diapers.
Measurable goals for our inaugural year of operations, tracked via our Logic Model + Theory of Change framework.
Target: mothers report feeling supported and less overwhelmed after receiving services
Target: complete recommended therapy sessions (national avg: 40-60%)

Per family over first 5 years (lost productivity, healthcare costs, child development impacts) — Mathematica Policy Research
Research shows every $1 invested in maternal mental health prevention can save $4–$15 in future healthcare costs, emergency interventions, and developmental services (PSI, 2017). Our holistic model is designed to maximize preventative impact from day one.

Background: Maria, a 28-year-old first-time mother from Houston's East End, struggled with severe postpartum depression three weeks after giving birth. As a Spanish-speaking immigrant with limited English proficiency and no family nearby, she felt isolated and overwhelmed. Her husband worked long hours, and she couldn't afford therapy on their single income.
Wings of Care Intervention: Through a referral from her pediatrician, Maria connected with Wings of Care. We coordinated six therapy sessions with a bilingual therapist specializing in perinatal mental health, arranged two professional home cleanings to reduce environmental stress, and delivered care packages with diapers, wipes, and self-care items monthly for three months.
Outcome: Maria completed all six therapy sessions and reported significant improvement in her EPDS score (from 18 to 7). She learned coping strategies, connected with a Spanish-speaking postpartum support group, and rebuilt confidence in her ability to care for her baby. Six months later, she's thriving as a mother and recently started volunteering to help other Spanish-speaking mothers navigate postpartum challenges.
"Wings of Care saved my life. I felt so alone and scared, but they helped me see that I could be a good mother. The cleaning service gave me space to breathe, and my therapist understood my culture and language. I'm not the same person I was three months ago—I'm stronger."
— Maria, Houston East End
Background: Jennifer, a 34-year-old marketing professional from Sugar Land, experienced severe postpartum anxiety after her second child. Despite having support from her husband, she couldn't shake intrusive thoughts about her baby's safety and struggled with panic attacks. The chaos in her home—dishes piling up, laundry everywhere—amplified her anxiety. She knew she needed help but couldn't find time between work and caring for two children.
Wings of Care Intervention: Wings of Care connected Jennifer with a therapist who specialized in postpartum anxiety and intrusive thoughts. We provided three professional home cleanings over six weeks, focusing on high-stress areas like the kitchen and nursery. Care packages included self-care items and educational resources about postpartum anxiety, helping her understand she wasn't alone.
Outcome: After five therapy sessions, Jennifer learned evidence-based strategies to manage her anxiety and intrusive thoughts. The home cleanings reduced her environmental stressors, giving her mental space to focus on healing. Her panic attacks decreased significantly, and she returned to work feeling confident in her ability to manage both her career and motherhood. She now advocates for maternal mental health awareness in her workplace.
"I thought I was going crazy with these scary thoughts. Wings of Care helped me understand that postpartum anxiety is real and treatable. The home cleaning was a game-changer—coming home to a clean kitchen meant I could actually relax instead of spiraling. I got my life back."
— Jennifer, Sugar Land
Background: Keisha, a 22-year-old single mother from Houston's Third Ward, faced postpartum depression while navigating financial instability and lack of family support. She was living in a one-bedroom apartment, struggling to afford diapers and basic necessities while caring for her newborn alone. Depression made even basic tasks feel impossible, and she rarely left her apartment.
Wings of Care Intervention: Wings of Care provided comprehensive support: four therapy sessions with a trauma-informed therapist who understood the intersections of poverty and mental health, two home cleanings to create a healthier environment, and monthly care packages with essential supplies (diapers, wipes, formula, hygiene items) valued at $125 each for four months. We also connected her with WIC, the Houston Food Bank, and a job training program.
Outcome: Keisha's depression gradually lifted as she received consistent support and practical resources. The therapy helped her process trauma and develop resilience. The care packages removed the constant stress of affording basic necessities, allowing her to focus on bonding with her baby and her own recovery. She completed a job training program, secured employment, and now serves as a peer mentor for other young mothers in her community.
"Before Wings of Care, I didn't think I could make it. I was drowning. They didn't just give me therapy—they gave me diapers, cleaned my apartment, and treated me like I mattered. They helped me see a future for me and my baby. Now I'm working and giving back because I want other moms to know there's hope."
— Keisha, Third Ward
Background: Priya, a 31-year-old mother from India living in Katy, struggled with postpartum depression but faced significant cultural stigma around mental health treatment in her South Asian community. Despite her husband's support, she felt ashamed to seek help and worried about judgment from family and friends. Traditional postpartum practices weren't providing the relief she needed.
Wings of Care Intervention: We matched Priya with a therapist experienced in working with South Asian families who understood cultural dynamics around mental health stigma. Five therapy sessions provided her with culturally sensitive support that honored her traditions while addressing her mental health needs. Home cleaning services and care packages gave her practical relief during a difficult time.
Outcome: Priya's EPDS score improved from 16 to 6 over eight weeks. She found ways to integrate mental health care with her cultural values and became an advocate within her community, speaking openly about her experience to reduce stigma. She now hosts informal gatherings for South Asian mothers to discuss postpartum challenges, creating safe spaces for others who might be struggling silently.
"In my culture, we don't talk about these feelings. I was suffering in silence. Wings of Care connected me with someone who understood where I come from and helped me see that taking care of my mental health doesn't mean abandoning my culture. Now I want other Indian mothers to know they can get help too."
