What to Expect at Your First Meeting

Typical Support Group Format:

  1. Welcome & Introductions (5-10 min): Share name, baby's age, what brought you to group
  2. Check-In Round (20-30 min): Each person shares how they're doing this week
  3. Topic Discussion (20-30 min): Facilitator leads discussion on specific topic (sleep, feeding, self-care, etc.) or open discussion
  4. Resource Sharing (5-10 min): Share helpful resources, referrals, recommendations
  5. Closing (5 min): Summary, reminders about next meeting, final thoughts

Common Ground Rules:

  • ✓ Confidentiality: What's shared in group stays in group
  • ✓ No judgment: All feelings and experiences are valid
  • ✓ Speak from personal experience ("I" statements)
  • ✓ Listen without interrupting
  • ✓ It's okay to pass or just listen
  • ✓ No unsolicited advice unless someone asks

Choosing the Right Group for You

Consider Questions to Ask
Location & Time Can I realistically get there? Does the meeting time work with baby's schedule? Is childcare provided or babies welcome?
Group Focus Is this for general support, specific issues (PPD/PPA), or social connection? Does it match what I need right now?
Group Size Small groups (5-10) allow more sharing time. Larger groups offer more perspectives. What feels comfortable?
Facilitation Peer-led (moms who've been there) or professionally-led (therapist/counselor)? Both have benefits!
Cost Free, insurance-covered, out-of-pocket? Can I afford it? Are scholarships available?
Format Structured discussions, drop-in style, or social meetups? What matches my comfort level and needs?

Tips for Introverts & Anxious Moms

Making Mom Friends Outside Formal Groups

Places to Meet Other Moms:

  • 🏞️ Local parks with playgrounds - Strike up conversations while babies play
  • 📚 Library story times - Free, scheduled activities that create natural conversation openings
  • 🏃‍♀️ Stroller fitness classes - Stroller Strides, Fit4Mom, Baby Boot Camp Houston
  • Coffee shops with play areas - Toddler-friendly cafes are mom-meeting goldmines
  • 🎨 Parent-child classes - Music, art, swimming classes for babies/toddlers
  • 🛒 Target/grocery store at 10am - You'll find other moms shopping with babies
  • Church/religious community - Many have young family groups

Conversation Starters:

  • "How old is your baby? Mine is [age] and [struggling with/loving] [topic]."
  • "Do you live nearby? I'm looking for local mom friends."
  • "What do you do for baby activities around here?"
  • "Your baby is so cute! Is this your first?"
  • "This [age/stage] is so hard, right? How are you surviving?"

If conversation goes well: "Hey, would you want to exchange numbers and maybe meet up for a playdate sometime?"

When Groups Aren't Enough

Support groups are wonderful, but they're not therapy. You may need professional help if:

📞 Professional Help Resources:

Crisis Support: 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline | 1-833-TLC-MAMA (Maternal Mental Health Hotline)

Find a Therapist: PSI Provider Directory (postpartum.net), Psychology Today, Open Path Collective

Wings of Care: 346-242-3200 | Financial assistance available for therapy
